The National Network for the Palliative Care of People with Learning Disabilities (NNPCPLD)

Home

History: The NNPCPLD was set up in November 1998. It was established by a small group of practitioners from either learning disability or palliative care services that were concerned that people with learning disabilities were not routinely accessing palliative care services when confronted with life threatening/limiting illnesses.

Initially the aim of the organisation was to link workers who were developing practice in this area but who were likely to be very isolated. It became clear fairly quickly that there was a great deal of interest but not a lot of knowledge in this area and therefore one of the main aims was to set up two study days annually in which practitioners could share knowledge and network with others working in similar situations. This has developed as a national resource but it was felt that many practitioners would not be able to access such distant training (no matter how low the cost) and thus a network of regional groups was established which continues to develop and grow throughout the country.
An emerging feature of the network is the provision of telephone and email information.
