Making a Will

It is a good idea for the person you are caring for to think about what they would like to happen to everything they own after their death.

They should consider the following questions:

  • What and where are your assets (your property, money, pensions, shares and so on)?
  • If you do not make a Will, what will happen to your assets after your death?
  • Do you want everything to go to one person?
  • Would you like some things, or some money, to go to certain people or to a 'good cause'?

Executors

When someone makes a Will, they normally identify one or more people who will ensure that their wishes are fulfilled. These people are called executors.

A solicitor will be able to tell you what an executor has to do and how to appoint one.

Finding help and advice

Legal advice

It is a good idea to seek legal advice from a solicitor about making a Will. The rules about signing and witnessing Wills can be complicated. You should compare solicitors' fees before making a decision about which solicitor to use.
