Nutrition

Despite all your efforts, the person for whom you care may not eat the food you prepare. This is nothing personal - it is very common with people who are ill.

Making eating easier

You may find that smaller meals are more acceptable if someone is ill.

You can also help the person you are caring for in other ways:

  • If possible, encourage them to sit upright when they are eating or drinking.
  • Make sure meals are taken in a relaxed environment.
  • Consider using alcohol as an appetite stimulant, such as offering a small sherry 15 minutes before a meal.
  • Use a small plate.
  • Offer small snacks or meals frequently.
  • If possible, prepare what is wanted, only when it is wanted.

Talk to your local hospice or District Nurse. They know what is available and what will help.

Meal replacements

Liquid replacements provide extra nutrition. They can be used as a meal replacement or taken between meals to increase intake.

You can get meal replacements on prescription from the GP. Some of the most popular ones are Ensure, Enlive, Fortisip and Fortijuice.
