Time off
As a carer you have the right to take time off work to deal with emergencies. You may also need occasional time off work to attend hospital or doctor's appointments. If you want to take a longer break from work, you could consider:
- taking extra leave, in addition to holidays
- taking a longer career break
- leaving work or taking early retirement.
Changing your working hours
Carers have the right to request flexible working arrangements, for example working part-time or working different shifts. You might prefer to start and leave work earlier or later, or take a longer or shorter lunch break. It may also be possible to work from home sometimes.

Practical help and information
Your employer might help you to think through your employment options, and give you advice on your pension and other benefits. They may have information about services in the local area that could help you. You may just need access to a telephone, so you can check that the person you are caring for is okay. Whatever the case, make sure your employer knows you are a carer and be clear about how they can help you, so that you can work more efficiently for them.
