Who provides hospice care

Most hospice care is provided by charitable hospices. There are also a number of hospices which operate in the NHS.

GPs, district nurses, paid carers and health and social care staff in hospitals and care homes can provide palliative care.

When the care is complex or the patient or their family have multiple problems, these professionals may refer someone to their local hospice or palliative care team.

Hospices work in partnership with primary and secondary care colleagues to make sure patients, their family and carers receive the right care and support.

The team

A full hospice or palliative care team can include:

  • nurses
  • doctors
  • allied health professionals
  • social workers
  • chaplains
  • counsellors
  • complementary therapists.

Volunteers are often an important part of the workforce delivering hospice care.
