Our ‘Palliative care toolkit’, which empowers health workers in resource-limited settings to integrate palliative care into their communities, has had a major impact on increasing patients’ access to palliative care across the world.
We secured funding to translate the toolkit into Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, French, Portuguese and Spanish. These new versions, along with the training manual for the toolkit we published this year, will enable even more health workers to gain vital palliative care skills.
By providing education, training and financial support, we have supported the development of hospice and palliative care professionals in the UK and overseas.
Providing education and training
We helped develop the expertise of more than 1,500 hospice and palliative care professionals through our biennial national conference and range of training courses, study days, workshops and seminars. We also helped several hospice and palliative care professional associations to run conferences and training events.
Our national conference has become an integral fixture in the palliative care calendar, as shown by this feedback from a delegate at the 2009 event:
"Out of the various conferences I attend, I feel Help the Hospices event is a ‘must’ to see and hear what is happening nationally."
Becky Cooper, lead nurse for palliative care at Norfolk Community Health and Care
Giving financial support
This year we awarded more than 800 professional development grants, which enabled hospice staff to access vital education and training. In addition, we awarded grants to several professionals from overseas to enable them to attend the worldwide summit of national associations in Vienna.
This year we launched the members area of our website, which contains a wealth of information and resources to support hospice fundraisers working in member hospices. It offers a number of case studies, as well as fundraising guides covering good retail practice, effective legacy fundraising and selling on eBay. We have also developed live online forums to facilitate the sharing of ideas and good practice.
