A life-limiting illness affects the body, the mind, the spirit, the social being, the family - and the care team. Hospice education strives to improve skills, knowledge and attitudes in all these areas. It reaches out to people who may never visit a hospice and helps to improve their lives.
Hospice education may take the form of:
- continuing professional development for hospice staff - paid staff and volunteers
- education and advice for health-care professionals in hospitals and the local community
- "outreach" programmes, eg. to staff in care homes or to other professionals working with bereaved children.
Many hospices have education centres and specialist libraries; some are forging links with universities to develop accredited courses and to undertake research.
Help the Hospices - committed to education
The need to extend and develop high quality hospice education is undisputed but funding has not kept pace with need. Support for education and training was one of the founding visions of Help the Hospices and is one of our heartland areas to this day.
