Events |
|
People worldwide will be discovering their voices this Saturday to support care
for people with life-limiting illness. Events are now registered in 67 countries
around the world and this is rising every day.
Voices for Hospices concerts are the major activities taking place around the
world with classical recitals, sing-a-longs and poetry. Thanks to all the choirs
and choral societies that have organised events for their local hospices.
Other activities taking place include a football competition in Uganda, media
workshops throughout India, a workshop on palliative care and breast cancer in
Morocco, awareness raising in Ecuador and a student walk in Albania.
It is not too late to take part.
Register your event on the website
and view events already registered.

2. Theme and
unifying factor |
|
The theme for 2009 is 'Discovering your
voice' highlighting the voices of those affected by life-limiting illnesses
around the world.
The unifying factor is a
story that was submitted
anonymously from Malaysia. This story highlights how hospice and palliative care
made a difference to this individual and their father who received hospice and
palliative care when he was diagnosed with cancer.
The story will be read out at events across the world as a
unifying factor. Many will also be lighting a candle to remember all those that
have and have not been able to access hospice and palliative care across the
world.

3. PR
and press |
|
A press release has been issued for World Hospice and Palliative Care Day to
highlight that the United Nations target for all people living with HIV to access the care that they need by 2010 will not be met. More needs to be
done to make sure that all those who need it can access quality,
affordable palliative care.

4. Messages of
support |
|
Mary Robinson, the President of Realizing Rights: The Ethical Globalization
Initiative, the former President of Ireland and the former United Nations
Commissioner for Human Rights, has leant her voice to support hospice and
palliative care development.
She stated for World Hospice and Palliative Care Day:
"Being able to access quality end of life care including hospice and
palliative care is a basic human right. The fact that so many of the world’s
population are denied this right at such a vulnerable time in their lives is an
affront to all of us.
It is unacceptable that an individual’s last months or hours of life are
unnecessarily difficult when hospice care would allow that mother or father, son
or daughter to live comfortably until the end.
We must intensify our efforts to listen to the needs of the dying and to
put in place hospice care services that respond sensitively and appropriately to
their needs."
