1. Autumn roadshows 2009

You may remember that last autumn Help the Hospices held a series of workshops around the End of Life Care Strategy. We plan to undertake a similar series of events this autumn and hold an event in each region in England plus one each in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. But this time the focus will be on the importance of our joint working and the national/local interface around the following three themes (recognising that there will be a need to adapt the focus for the meetings in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to make sure the events are relevant to all our members):
  • The responsibilities of membership – Ours and Yours
  • How do we get greater national profile of hospices?
  • Making the case: the evidence for hospice care

We also plan to circulate discussion papers focused on these four themes. Online discussion forums are planned to encourage debate and to feed into the meetings.

The target audience for these events will be chief executives and chairmen of our member and associate member hospices but other senior staff and trustees will be welcome to attend as well if they wish. More details and a formal booking form have been sent to you. These can also be found on the courses pages of the Help the Hospices website.

1 October 2009: Northern Ireland region at Northern Ireland Hospice
2 October 2009: South East Coast region at Pilgrim's Hospice, Kent
5 October 2009: West Midlands region at Douglas Macmillan Hospice, Stoke-on-Trent
6 October 2009: Yorkshire & Humber region at St Gemma's Hospice, Leeds
7 October 2009: North East region at St Cuthbert's Hospice, Durham
12 October 2009: South West region at Dorothy House Hospice, Wiltshire
14 October 2009: South Central region at The Rowan's Hospice, Hampshire
15 October 2009: East Midlands region at Nottinghamshire Hospice
16 October 2009: Scotland Meeting at Strathcarron Hospice, Stirlingshire
5 November 2009: North West region at Trinity Hospice, Blackpool
6 November 2009: London and East of England region at Hospice House, London
13 November 2009: Wales meeting at St David's Foundation Hospice Care, Newport

We have agreed the content of these meetings with the Advisory Council and believe that the topics cover key issues and concerns of interest and relevance to all hospices. We urge you to attend and participate in our collective future.

Please email Rowena Lovell, executive aide, or call her on 020 7520 8202 if you have any questions or queries.

2. End of Life Care Strategy: Hospice Capital Programme

The funding for the End of Life Care Strategy in England included a £40 million hospice capital programme to improve the environment in which adult hospice care is provided.

Hospices will be invited to submit proposals for projects that will improve the care environment for patients, their families and carers. The funding will be available for projects starting in April 2010 with a completion deadline of 31 March 2011.

The Department of Health is currently working on the practicalities of the programme, and more details on the criteria and the application process will be circulated to hospices in due course.
Help the Hospices is working closely with the Department of Health in drawing up criteria. In the meantime, adult hospices in England are encouraged to think now about whether there are any potential projects that could be worked up in to a proposal.

We do not have any additional information about the programme at this stage, but will circulate any updates when we receive them.
