Why this grant is needed
Worldwide, 52 million people die each year. Around one out of 10 deaths are due to cancer. However, each day millions more people suffer from other life-limiting illnesses such as AIDS.
We provide education and training programmes for professionals and support the development and provision of palliative care projects in resource-poor countries.
Funded initiatives
One international grant funded an innovative hospice care programme in one of the remotest parts of Kerala, India. Four hundred volunteers were trained in the basics of pain relief and care for patients at the end of their life. They could then give some of their patients the first relief from pain they had ever experienced.
These volunteers now use the skills that they have learnt to administer this care to many more patients and their families at home. By sharing their skills and knowledge with others, they are also able to extend care to many more patients.
