Why this grant is needed
As the demand for palliative care grows, so too does the need for committed and qualified palliative care workers. Palliative care medical staff and volunteers of all levels need to access education and training wherever they are in the UK.
Finding the funds and resources to allow staff to be released for training is a constant issue for hospices. Hospice training budgets rarely have the funds available and individuals usually cannot afford this either.
Examples of funded initiatives
The initiatives funded through this programme had a tangible and significant impact.
MA in ethics
A specialist registrar at a hospice in the North East was awarded £750 towards an MA in Ethics of Cancer and Palliative Care. It gave her the skills and confidence to work with patients with complex needs, and where difficult ethical decisions need to be made.
MSc in healthcare
A chaplain at a Scottish hospice was awarded £750 towards an MSc in healthcare. This helped him acquire the skills necessary to teach in the hospice’s education wing, and deepened his knowledge of loss and bereavement.
