Campaigns and issues

Help the Hospices raises awareness of the hospice movement as well as raising funds for hospices. We campaign on issues, giving a national voice to local hospice views and concerns. We also raise money and awareness through a number of events that anyone can take part in, and work in partnership with many companies.

Carers

Thousands of people provide unpaid care for family and friends with terminal illnesses. They need greater support.

Help the Hospices supports the needs of carers and is proud to be one of the charities involved in Carers Week. We also seek to influence the Government's Carer's Strategy.

End of Life Care Strategy and government policy

The government published its first End of Life Care Strategy for adults in England in July 2008. Help the Hospices made key recommendations on what needs to be done. Health care in the UK is devolved to each nation and Scotland and Wales have also produced papers on end of life care last year. Hospice funding is just one of the key issues being tackled.

Read about our views on the NHS Next Stage Review and other key areas of government policy affecting hospices.

World Hospice and Palliative Care Day

Thousands of people around the world stage concerts and other events to raise awareness and raise funds for hospices and palliative care services locally, nationally and internationally to mark this annual global event.

This year's World Hospice and Palliative Care Day will take place on 10 October 2009.

Light Up a Life

Run by and for the UK’s 240 local hospices, Light up a Life is a special way of remembering loved ones in the run up to Christmas, which is often a difficult time of year for bereaved families. Hundreds of moving events take place in a variety of locations from hospices, gardens, cathedrals and churches to train stations and shopping centres.
