Service of Thanksgiving for St Luke’s Hospice founder

12 January 2010

A Service of Thanksgiving celebrating the life and work of the founder of Sheffield’s St Luke’s Hospice will be held at Sheffield Cathedral on 13 February.

Professor Eric Wilkes, who died in November last year at the age of 89, was a Derbyshire GP and Professor of Community Care and General Practice at the University of Sheffield who devoted much of his life to hospice care movement. One of Britain’s most eminent authorities on palliative care, Professor Wilkes was the driving force behind St Luke’s, the first hospice outside London, which opened in 1971.

The Service of Thanksgiving will take place on Saturday 13 February at Sheffield Cathedral at 2pm. Admission is by ticket only. Applications are welcome and should be made by January 29 to Anita Taylor at St Luke’s Hospice, Little Common Lane, Sheffield, S11 9NE. Call 0114 235 7551 or email a.taylor@hospicesheffield.co.uk
