Boo Armstrong, 37, was invited to represent Help the Hospices, the UK charity for hospice care, which is The Football League’s official charity partner this season.
The volunteer from the Hospice of St Francis in Berkhamsted was joined by Michael Howard, chairman of Help the Hospices and former Home Secretary, as VIP guests of The Football League at the iconic match.
As a former football player for Camden Town FC in the women’s league, football is close to Boo’s heart and she was proud to represent the partnership between Help the Hospices and The Football League.
Boo, a social entrepreneur who has worked in healthcare and charities throughout her career, said:
"When I started volunteering at the Hospice of St Francis, I realised how invisible hospices are in society. I became aware of this wonderful world of hospice care which is full of inspiring people, and I was amazed by the kindness and support shown to patients and their families.
"The partnership between Help the Hospices and The Football League is exciting because it has made hospice care visible to millions of football fans across the country, and lets them know these brilliant resources exist in their communities and how much hospices need their support."
As a volunteer at the Hospice of St Francis, Boo has made an incredible difference by helping raise vital funds, advising on strategy and setting up a self-help group at the hospice for holistic therapies.
Fans voted for Help the Hospices to be The Football League’s Official Charity Partner for the 2011/12 season. Help the Hospices champions and supports hospice care, working with more than 200 local hospices so that more seriously ill people and their families can live well.
Half of the 90,000 fans at the Carling Cup Final were likely to know someone who has been cared for by a hospice.
