Help the Hospices Commission into the Future of Hospice Care

The Help the Hospices Commission into the Future of Hospice Care has been set up to provide options for hospices who wish to consider their strategic position and offerings in the next 10 -20 years.

Following the publication of the Demos report 'Dying for Change' The Help the Hospices Commission into the Future of Hospice Care was set up to provide strategic direction for hospices for the next 10 to 20 years.

Chaired by Dame Clare Tickell and with a range of expertise from within and outside the hospice sector the commission will consider the future opportunities and challenges in palliative and end of life care which may affect hospice care.

First meeting

The first meeting of the Commission took place on 22 November 2011. Most members attended and presentations were made by:

  • Charles Leadbeater
  • Baroness Ilora Finlay
  • Dame Barbara Monroe

The presentations covered the current and future contexts for hospice care.  A work plan for the next two years was also established. The commission will receive regular updates and reports as work progresses.

Future meetings

The commission will meet every three to four months until mid-2013

Moving forward

The first stage of the workplan will focus on the needs of people at the end of life in the future and the potential role of hospices to meet these.

Volunteers: Vital to the future of hospice care

Hear evidence of innovative practice from across the UK and Europe at an event on 20 April in London. This will encourage thinking about how best to nurture, cherish and deploy the extraordinary work of volunteers in response to the stark challenges of increasing demand and diminishing resource.
