Care Beyond Cancer

Help the Hospices set up the Care Beyond Cancer programme in April 2004. It was set up to encourage the development of hospice and palliative care for people who have life-threatening conditions other than cancer.

The programme was funded by a number of trusts which offered grants totalling nearly £900,000. Although all of the grants have now been awarded, a number of the projects are still within their funding period.

Funded projects

Each project is trying to make a tangible difference to the quality of life for terminally ill patients and their families by:

  • developing new services and models of care
  • increasing the skills of professionals by providing education and training
  • making information available to patients, their families and carers (whether professional or informal).

Service development guide

As part of the programme, the University of Southampton School of Nursing and Midwifery evaluated the experiences of the funded projects and produced a guide to developing a non-cancer service. This resource offers advice on how to set up and run services for patients with conditions other than cancer.
