Identifying carers' needs

This study day looked at issues for palliative care providers when developing a process to assess the needs of carers.

It marked the launch of the Identifying carers' needs in the palliative setting guide for professionals. The study day was facilitated by Dr Dai Roberts from St Ann's Hospice, who chaired a working group responsible for developing the guide, and Lucy Daniels from Worklife Answers. There were also presentations from practitioners and researchers.

About this event

The aims of the study day were to:

  • explain the rationale for developing a process to assess the needs of carers

  • provide an overview of the issues covered in the guidance

  • consider how these issues relate to the local context

  • encourage participants to develop a carers’ assessment process in their own organisations.

 

The day explored the following:

  • how to define ‘carer’ in the palliative care setting

  • mapping support services for carers in the local area

  • identifying what needs to assess, when the assessment takes place and who is involved.
