So a successful application for a Department of Health section 64 grant in conjunction with the national MND Association was made, which enabled the work to be extended for a further two years.
After that time the changes to the way of working developed through this project are now the norm for everyone involved in the care of a person with MND.
This means that they continue to be cared for in a coordinated way, experiencing uniformly high standard of care, throughout their illness and at the end of their life.
Clinical excellence award
In recognition of the huge difference this project has made to people with MND, this work to develop a recognised care pathway for patients living with MND received a
Bupa Foundation Clinical Excellence Award of £15,000 in 2009.
This was used to further develop the project, for example by:
- piloting the use of multi-disciplinary patient held documentation
- developing a teaching package for care agencies.
Sharing good practice
Guidance on how the service has developed is being produced for use by
others and is disseminated nationally via the MND Association.
Throughout the course of the project, various people involved in it have
presented their work at national and international conferences and
there has been a lot of interest in it.
