Over the three years of the programme, nearly £1 million was awarded to 444 individuals working at 127 UK hospices. Many other volunteers were also involved in helping with the projects.
The projects
The award-winning projects covered a wide range of activities which included:
- arts and crafts
- music
- bereavement counselling support
- complementary therapies
- carers and siblings support groups
- reminiscence work
- gardening
- newsletters
- volunteer training.
Each of the projects added something extra to the work of their hospice and they are all distinctive, cost-effective and of benefit to the hospice community and the volunteers.

Events
Several events for award winners were held throughout the scheme. In November 1999 the Chair of the Millennium Commission, Rt Hon Chris Smith MP, presented certificates to award winners at Help the Hospices annual national conference.
A group of winners met Her Majesty The Queen at the opening of Hospice House in May 2000 and in July 2001 winners were welcomed to an event at the Hampton Court Flower Show. Then, in April 2002 over 100 Millennium Award winners displayed their projects at the Spring Forward Millennium Award Winners Conference at Sheffield University.
