Steps
1. Our grants team
Officers will check that the application meets the basic eligibility criteria. Any further information required will be requested at this stage.
2. Our international team and other advisors
All eligible applications will be considered by:
- Help the Hospices international team
- a selection of specialist advisors from around the world.
3. The Wolfson Foundation
Recommendations to fund or not, are sent to the Wolfson Foundation for approval.
Assessment criteria
Applications will be assessed against the following criteria:
- the degree to which the course applied for will improve palliative care provision in your workplace
- the degree to which the course for which funding is sought encourages shared learning across organisations and geographical areas
- the availability of funding from other sources to supplement a bursary from the Wolfson Foundation
For all applications perceived value for money of your request will be taken into consideration.
It is important that you address each point in your application. These are not listed in order of importance.
Help the Hospices will contact the person identified as the application sponsor with a decision on the application. We aim to let you know within six weeks from the date the application is received but sometimes it may take longer.
We may receive more applications than the amount of funding available. Therefore your application’s success can not be guaranteed and the decision you receive is final.
What happens if successful?
If your application for a grant is successful then we will send to the application sponsor:
- an award letter
- an acceptance form
- bank details form.
To claim your grant
The acceptance form must be signed by the application sponsor, usually the chief executive or director of the organisation, agreeing to the conditions of the grant.
The bank details form asks for details of the bank account of your organisation as well as the organisation providing the course. Course fees will be paid directly to the organisation running the course. Any remaining balance of your grant will be paid to your employing organisation by bank transfer.
We cannot pay the grant until we receive these signed forms. You can request payment of the bursary either before or after the start of your course.
Payments will not be made to an individual.
Bursaries are valid for twelve months from the award date and can only be used for the course applied for. We reserve the right to withdraw funding after twelve months if it is not claimed, so it is important that you keep us up to date with progress.
Once the grant is spent
Once the grant has been spent, you will need to send us evidence of how the grant was spent, such as relevant paid receipts and invoices.
We will also ask you to send us a written report about what you have learnt after the course has finished. There is a section for your employing organisation to provide information about
- the wider benefits derived from the training
- what difference it has made in practice.
We may also call or email you after you have completed your course to find out about the longer term impact of attending the course to yourself as well as palliative care in your area.
