Review of applications received for a Department of Health capital grant 2010

Well done to all those hospices that got their application in for a Department of Health (DH) capital grant by the deadline date despite the adverse weather conditions

How many applications did we receive?

We received 153 applications – 144 from adult hospices and nine from children’s units.

Adult hospices focussed on improvements to the inpatient unit and day hospice service areas.

Children’s hospices mainly applied for work to improve their facilities for young adults, so that they can offer more age appropriate care and support during the transition from children’s to adult services.

Where did applications come from?

Applicants were spread fairly evenly over the whole of England. The greatest numbers of applications are from the north west. However, this reflects the high concentration of hospices in that area.

How much was requested?

The total amount requested was £65 million. The total grant budget available is £40 million. DH have some difficult decisions to make, and clearly not everyone will receive the funding level they asked for.

The majority of requests for funding were under £400,000. However, 44 applications requested funding between £400,000 and £600,000, with a further 39 hospices requesting over £600,000. The graph below illustrates how the funding requests were distributed.

What happens now?

The steering group, consisting of experts in the field, are meeting in mid February to review all of the applications received. Their comments will be forwarded to the Department of Health for them to make the final decisions by the end of March 2010.

Additional resources on offer

We are working with Herbert Smith LLP, who have kindly agreed to produce for Help the Hospices the following standard contract templates. These will be available, free of charge, for hospices to use when drawing up contracts with architects and other professionals and with building contractors.

We are in the final phase of drafting the folllowing templates and will shortly make them available on request to any hospice to use as necessary.
