Board development programme

Funded by the Monument Trust, this was part of a broader programme of work to support good governance in hospices by providing an opportunity for hospices to develop their boards of trustees.

Scope of the programme

Consultants from the Centre for Charity Effectiveness at Cass Business School (City University, London) were appointed to deliver a programme of work with 40 hospices. The programme was equally relevant to boards that were:

  • operating effectively and that aspire to go from 'good to great'

  • experiencing challenges or difficulties.

It included:
  • an initial board observation, and interviews with the key members
  • a follow-up evaluation of the individual boards, eight months later, to measure how far they have progressed
  • a report on progress to the individual hospices as well as a collated report identifying common issues and recommendations for the future.

Between the first and second board observations, the consultant offered the hospice some tools to help them focus on development activities as well as interim telephone calls or email contact to ‘touch base’ and maintain momentum.

Timescales

The first board observations happened in September 2011 and the diagnosis part of the programme will finish by December 2012.

The final evaluation report will be completed by March 2012.
