Department of Health capital grant programme 2010 - 2011

As part of the funding made available to support the implementation of the End of Life Care Strategy, the Department of Health allocated £40 million in 2010 - 2011 to fund improvements to the physical environment of hospices in England.

Grants made

123 grants were made to hospices in England ranging in size from £25,000 to just under £1 million. A wide range of capital work was funded such as improvements to:

  • inpatient units
  • day hospice service areas
  • gardens.

All work will be completed by the end of March 2011 when hospices will be able to show how the physical improvements contribute to improved care provision for patients, their families and carers.

Who could apply?

Any of the following hospices based in England were eligible to apply for a capital grant to improve the physical environment:

  • Independent adult hospices

  • Sue Ryder Care hospices

  • Marie Curie hospices

  • NHS hospices (subject to Public Dividend Capital restrictions)

  • Children's hospices (to support capital projects specifically aimed at building or refurbishing young adult areas).

Assessment criteria

A panel of expert advisers assessed and ranked applications against the following criteria:

  • the direct benefits that will accrue to patients, carers and families

  • extent to which the project demonstrates tangible, physical improvements to the environment

  • extent to which the project will deliver measurable improvements against the Department of Health Quality Innovation, Productivity and Prevention (QIPP) framework

  • the extent to which the need for the project is demonstrated

  • the viability of the project, including the likelihood of it being completed by the end of March 2011.
