Guidance and criteria

The Wolfson bursaries aim to improve the quality of care given to patients, their carers and families.

Please read through this page to find out what is and what is not eligible before you apply.

How much can you apply for?

Individuals can apply for a maximum of 50% of course or module fees, up to £1,500 in any one year and a maximum of £3,000 in any 3-year period – subject to funds being available.

The amount awarded will be decreased proportionately for applicants working less than 18 hours a week.

Grants can be used to cover fees for university accredited palliative care courses including degree, masters and PhD level programmes and modules from the same.

Conferences will have an agreed level of funding available but, grants will only be open to those who have a poster or oral presentation accepted at the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC), Palliative Care Congress (PCC) and Help the Hospices’ conferences only - subject to funds being available.

General criteria

Applications must be received at Help the Hospices at least one month before the start of the course, conference or module.

Grants must be claimed within twelve months of the award being made. Help the Hospices reserves the right to withdraw funding on grants older than 12 months.

Applications can be made for individual modules or a particular year of multi-year courses. A new application form must be submitted for each subsequent year or module and must be received by the grants team at least a month before the start of the next year or further modules.

We define accredited courses as those which are recognised by a university.

The maximum funding given to any one hospice in any one year will be £7,500.

Hospices with free reserves greater than 12 months of charitable expenditure (as per latest audited accounts) will be ineligible for funding.

For the purpose of this grant programme:

  • free reserves are defined as all reserves, including designated funds, but with the exception of endowed or restricted funds and any reserves represented by tangible fixed assets

  • running costs are defined as total expenditure as per the most recent audited accounts

  • where the hospice operates one or more trading subsidiaries, the figures are to be based on the consolidated levels of reserves and expenditure for the group.

Once the budget for the Wolfson UK bursary programme has been fully allocated we will cease to award further grants, until such a time as additional funds have been raised.

What is not eligible?

The following are not eligible for funding:

  • any course or conference that is not focussed on palliative care

  • any course or conference that has already started or taken place

  • any palliative care course that is not accredited by a university

  • applications to attend a conference where a poster or oral presentation has not been accepted

  • 1-day study courses

  • courses that are termed as update or refresher courses

  • subsistence, travel and accommodation costs incurred whilst attending courses

  • courses or conferences already subsidised by Help the Hospices

  • in-house training. We can not fund applications to attend courses organised by the employing hospice - unless they are externally accredited and that no more than 25% of participants are staff from the host hospice

  • applications for courses where fees are under £200

  • costs towards research funding but, we will consider funding towards PhD tuition fees.
