In 2011 the theme was home hospice care, specifically to support projects focusing on setting up or developing helpline services, enabling people with life-limiting conditions to be cared for at home for longer.
An advice line which operates around the clock can give vital reassurance to patients nearing the end of their lives, and their carers. A trained helpline operator can:
-
reassure someone who is anxious about a change in their condition
- provide skilled advice
-
arrange for a visit from hospice colleagues if necessary.
With this support from the hospice many patients who might otherwise have called the emergency services, are able to avoid an admission to hospital.
