Motor Neurone Disease Parliamentary Group launch report on specialist palliative care

22 June 2011

The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Motor Neurone Disease (MND), a cross party group of MPs and Peers with an interest in MND, have launched a report of their inquiry into access to specialist palliative care for people with MND.

Recognising the role of hospices, the report considers how to increase the availability and quality of specialist palliative care for people with MND.

Recommendations include:

  • registers which give NHS providers with timely information about:
    • the needs and wishes of people with MND
    • specialist palliative care provision
  • standards that can be used to measure quality care, such as access to:
    • end of life care by community nursing 24/7
    • care planning
    • provision of specialist palliative care.
  • commissioners using all resources available to them to:
    • provide the highest possible quality of specialist palliative care services
    • data showing the improvements to services.
