The economic outlook for 2010

Following on from his appearance at the Forum of Chairmen conference in 2009, Trevor Williams, chief economist, Lloyds TSB Corporate Markets revisits a hospice audience, and shares his views on the current economic situation and looks to the future.
Introduced by Sally Taylor, Help the Hospices treasurer and chief executive, St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth, Trevor started with a recap of economic events over the last four years. He then went on to explain why the UK is lagging behind in the global recovery:

  • recessions associated with financial shocks are deeper and take longer to recover from

  • companies and households have substantially borrowed, and bank lending has contracted

  • households have started to rebuild their savings and reduce their debt.

While we are still in recession, there are signs of recovery.

Some sectors will recover at different rates. The view is that the government and other services will continue to be challenged, and this will undoubtedly lead to a rethink in policy and service delivery.
