A patient's perspective

The Food and Nutrition Group believes that the wider idea of food, nutrition, culture, health and healthcare is of particular interest to patients and carers. In this video, a doctor and current member of the group talks about his experience of food and nutrition after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

Listening to patients

We have involved patients in our group and we have listened; giving a patient control of their food, exercise regime, lifestyle and environment can positively affect their physical and emotional wellbeing.
Healthcare professionals can learn by listening to their patients’ stories, and patients can be helped by listening to each other.

Living with lung cancer

Dealing with the diagnosis of lung cancer, along with all the treatment that results, is a massive under-taking for anyone. Your life, and that of your family, is turned upside down in just one moment. You have often had a number of investigations before the diagnosis is made, but then a whole heap more are arranged. Once all that has been completed, you move into chemotherapy and the battle for survival against the disease and the toxic effects of the treatment.

Although the diagnosis of lung cancer came as a complete shock, I was in the fortunate position of working as a hospital consultant within the National Health Service. This enabled me to understand everything that the oncologists were saying, understand the meaning behind the test results and make sure I received the best treatment for me. I appreciate this is a relatively unusual, although privileged position to be in and have made this video in the hope it will help others in a similar position to myself, facing living with a terminal disease. I myself have found information about lung cancer from other sufferers invaluable.
