Queen’s speech presented to Parliament at the State Opening

3 June 2010

On the 25 May, the Government set out its legislative programme for the coming session of Parliament.

The Queen’s Speech set out the legislative basis for the coalition’s programme for government. The speech contained 24 new bills.

Health Bill

A new health bill will seek to shift the focus of the NHS from targets to outcomes. It will create an Independent NHS Board, and strengthen the role of the Care Quality Commission and Monitor. It will also seek to reduce NHS administration costs by a third.

Public Bodies (Reform) Bill

This bill will seek to reduce the cost of bureaucracy and the number of ‘quangos’ that the government hopes will bring about savings of £1 billion a year.

Further information

The government's full legislative programme is available on the Number 10 website. Member hospices will soon be able to access a detailed briefing on the forthcoming legislative programme which looks at the key legislation affecting hospice care.
