Resources for schools

Many hospices work closely with their local schools to provide information and resource material on death, dying and bereavement. Equally, many schools and colleges support their local hospices in a variety of practical ways.

Resources

Help the Hospices has produced a range of resource materials for use in schools including:

Key Stage 3 (11 to 14 year olds)

'The Hospice Pack: hospice and palliative care for citizenship' is a free resource pack produced for schools. It is aimed at 11 to 14 year olds.

The pack has been developed in conjunction with teachers, hospice staff and school managers and piloted across the UK. It links to three areas of the core curriculum:

  • Citizenship

  • PSHE/ PSD

  • RE

Its contents include:

  • the hospice movement

  • children’s understanding and experience of loss and grief

  • faith and cultural aspects of bereavement.

There are also two suggested assemblies and six lesson plans.

Sixth forms and FE colleges

  • the UN Declaration of Human Rights

  • hospice and palliative care

  • the possible barriers to care

  • what action is needed

  • what individuals can do to help.

Primary schools

'Supporting bereaved children - A handbook for primary schools' helps primary school staff to respond to their pupils’ needs by:

  • helping them to understand grief, bereavement, loss and change through the eyes of the primary school child

  • highlighting opportunities in the curriculum to prepare children for these experiences

  • identifying the role that school can play in offering appropriate, timely and safe support, advice and guidance.

Its contents include:

  • understanding grief and bereavement

  • loss, change and grief in the school curriculum

  • the role of the school in supporting bereaved children

  • meeting individual needs

  • resources for schools.

The handbook was written by Erica Brown, a freelance consultant who works actively with organisations at the forefront of children and young people’s palliative care. She was formerly head of research and development (care) at Acorns Children’s Hospices and has long standing
senior management experience in schools, colleges and universities.
