Hospice care in a hospice

Care provided in a hospice is known as in-patient care. Sometimes people are admitted to a hospice for short periods of time for pain and symptom management.

What is in-patient care?

In-patient care is provided in a hospice building.

An in-patient unit can provide care to people at any stage of their illness for short periods but usually during the final stages of their illness.

Few people stay in an in-patient unit for more than 10 to 14 days, many return home or to another care setting where they may continue to receive care and support.

Trends

The number of in-patient beds available has not grown significantly in recent years.

While hospices have experienced significant growth in community based care there remains a stable demand for in-patient care.
